Orlando to the Keys, how long will it take in car?

Travelling to florida in 2 wks time and spending the 1st wk at the Animal Lodge, then picking up our hire car from dollar and travelling down to the keys, staying at the Hawks Cay resort for 1 wk. Does anyone know how long the trip will take? Will probably stop off for refreshments and a quick look around either Fort Lauderdale or Miami.

Hawks cay resort is on Duck Key about half way down the Keys ,about 100 miles south of Miami.Depending on Traffic and the way you decide to go expect it to take 6-8 hours for your journey.

From Orlando to Miami...it is approx. 4 hours....usually closer to 5 depending on traffic and them from Miami to the Key you will be staying at....another 4 hours.

One thing you might want to check on with the car rental company is how many miles you are allowed before they charge you per mile. A trip down to the keys could wipe out your allowance and then you would get hit with a very large bill at the end of the rental because of all the miles that were put on the car.

I live in Marathon which is about 20 minutes south of Duck Key. I can honestly tell you that it doesn%26#39;t take 4 hours to get from Miami to Duck Key, which is where Hawk%26#39;s Cay is located. It takes about 2 hours to get from Miami to Marathon, so a little less to Duck Key.

We have made the drive to Orlando(via the Turnpike) many, many times from our home in the Keys and it always takes 6 hours. If you are traveling through the Miami area around rush hour it will add time to your drive as the toll plazas on the Turnpike get backed up at that time.

If all is normal expect a 6 hour drive. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

You will save time if you go around miami via the toll roads so it should be a 6-7 hour trip. If you go through Miami like on the I95 you could encounter a lot of traffic even when you reach the US 1. That could easily and an hour plus to your time.

If you take the Florida Turnpike from Orlando, you will save alot of drive time. It is a toll road so it will cost you but save you alot of headaches (traffic and road construction) if you take it over I-95. If you plan to stop in the Lauderdale/Miami area you can still exit the turnpike at various locations. Or you could take the scenic route and the slower route, and drive US1/A1A along the east coast beaches. Happy trails..........

Hi , WE just did this very trip. It took us 4.5 Hours from Orlando to Miami. Try to do this trip during non busy hours as you should take the FLA turnpike all the way to Key largo were it turns into rte 1. From Miami to Hawks Cay took us just under 2 Hours. This trip can be longer if there is traffic. One lane each way. Awesome trip ! Stayed in a sunset villa and it was incredible.

caz6116---Agree w/other posters. Take Florida Turnpike from FLL to Keys. You should have 3 or 4 dollars in change for the toll booths but it%26#39;s definitely worth it. Of course if you want to go through Miami, Collins Ave into South Beach is pretty cool. So is Coral Gables. If you don%26#39;t want to take the time for this, head straight down FL Turnpike -- much easier!

Since you%26#39;re all the way at Hawk%26#39;s Cay, make sure to take a day and drive on into Key West. It%26#39;s one of my favorite cities in the US. DH and I fly into FLL and drive down about once every other year and really enjoy it.

Another good piece of advice that was mentioned earlier.... Make sure you have unlimited miles on your rental car. Can certainly cost you several dollars if not unlimited.

Good luck and HAVE FUN!!

karen.....thank you so much for all your tips. We will prob stop for a while in Miami, break up the journey and then head down to the keys. Would like to show the kids Miami.

Six hours, give or take, as hsk says. Keep in mind that our summer downpours might affect your drive time as much as traffic does. (And beware people who don%26#39;t know how to drive when it rains!)

The turnpike/toll road is the better route, IMO, but it%26#39;s going to cost you ... I don%26#39;t recall the final tally, but I think it%26#39;s $12 to $16 from Florida City to near Orlando.

Take into consideration the day and time when you plan your FLL or Miami stop. Traffic can really drag you down, and they drive like maniacs up there. (No offense, Miami folks, but you know it%26#39;s true!) You might be better off touring on your back to the airport.
