Transpotation from Amtrak to an area hotel in Orlando

Our youth group will be traveling via Amtrak to Orlando in April, 2007. I would like to know the name of a good motorcoach carrier that would transport 30-35 individuals to their hotel from Amtrak and vice versa. Please give the phone number also if you have it.

Transpotation from Amtrak to an area hotel in Orlando

You could check with Mears transportation company. Many people have used them from this forum and have been pleased with their service. They have a website

Transpotation from Amtrak to an area hotel in Orlando

I agree with the previous poster. Also, Amtrak has rental cars in the station. I know that wouldn%26#39;t work for you, but if you call Amtrak, they may help assist you in securing transfers.

I also agree with the first poster. I highly recommend Mears, they are very well-equipped, reliable, and proffesional. Its the largest transportation company in Central Florida; they provide everything from taxi cabs to limousines to motor coaches for large groups. Visit thier official website:

Epcot review

Soarin Soarin Soarin!!! This is the best ride we went on period!! The feeling of gliding over California was very realistic. The motions are smooth as silk and Disney even invites you to use your sense of smell during the ride. Test track was a fun ride during which your vehicle is put through the same tests that GM puts their vehicles through and the 65 mph speed burst at the end is an exhilarating experience. Don%26#39;t diss Living With the Land, I found this boat ride to be informative and entertaining. Honey I shrunk the audience is a good 3-D movie, you definitely should watch it. The new figment ride is nothing to sneeze about, but at the very least it provides a catchy tune and some laughs. Spaceship Earth is a classic and everyone who steps into Epcot should experience this journey through the history of communication. The World Showcase was great. This is the only place where you get to experience these many cultures in such a short distance. There is plenty of food to choose from in this part of the park. Illuminations is a solid night show which incorporates fireworks, lazer effects, fire and a big earth shaped t.v. Do not miss it!

Animal Kingdom, Typhoon Lagoon, Magic Kingdom and MGM reviews to come tomorrow.

Epcot review

Glad to see you enjoyed Epcot Pennstate! And yes Soarin, Soarin Soarin!!!!

Epcot review

loved your review.

The illuminations/fireworks is that on every night or how often is that on?

Illuminations is on every night of the year at 9.00 p.m. The park closes shortly after.

Not to be missed! (But select your viewing place at least 1 hour early).

I am so glad you enjoyed Epcot - it is my favorite park. I%26#39;m enjoying your trip reports.

Cheers hydra.Going in May2007 but plans developing already.

Epcot only Disney we will probably do.

One Day Magic Kingdom Pass?

We are having a week in Orlando and a week in Bahamas.

We only want to do the one day at MK and have the other passes sorted, ie Universal, Sea World etc.

Does anybody know if you can get 1 day passes and how much they are. We cant prebuy them here in the UK.

Thanks

One Day Magic Kingdom Pass?

Yes, you can buy them at the park gate for about $64 plus tax.

Unfortunately, there are very few if any discounts to be had for one-day tickets.

One Day Magic Kingdom Pass?

Also, you can buy them directly from WDW website before you leave, and then pick them up at the ';will call'; windows when you get to the park.

thanks kats

Not sure that UK customers are able to but single-day tickets from Disney%26#39;s website (they tend to push the multi-day%26#39;s to Brits).

But,you can also buy them at the Disney shop in MCO airport,Guest Relations at DTD,the Concierge at WDW Resort Hotels and Disney Stores/Character Warehouse in selected Malls.

(see www.wdwinfo.com for details. Click on Discount tickets, then Ticket Locations).

kat-cubs-fan,

We are also looking for one day tickts, but to Epcot. Thanks for the notification that we can buy them at MCO. One of the web sites made the following statement when you buy a one day ticket.

';One day tickets do not allow you to use Disney transportation.'; Tell me that is not so! We are staying on Disney property.

Hello seawolf,

Because you are staying on a Disney property you will be able to utilize the Disney transportation system.

hiya healin - congrats on the ';Expert'; status!! I didn%26#39;t know.

(%26#39;course I hardly come to this forum;)

Seawolf,

Don%26#39;t know where you got that information, but really, once you%26#39;re on Disney property, ANYONE can use Disney transportation.

So, technically, if you were a non-Disney resort guest, but were at Downtown Disney and wanted to go to a theme park, you could catch a bus, with a round-about journey via one of the resort hotels.

ANYONE can use Disney transportation; its not restricted to any certain ticket or place.

Hey Beach good to see you here! Thanks for the congratulations! Been an ';Expert'; for awhile now:) So, when%26#39;s your next trip to Disney?

Kids have been on me forEVER to go to DW!

I would love to - when I win the lottery ;)

But since I now know that you are the expert here - maybe we really could work something out. I need to read over all these posts and

get some ideas!

I have only been to DW once, when I was 15 and it was for only one day. We were vacationing in Ormond Beach and drove over for the day. I remember we parked in ';Goofy'; parking lot and the only ';ride'; we went on was this pirate ship around this lagoon. We just walked all over, and still spent way too much $$$

Cruises

Would anyone know of 1/2 night cruises around the New Year 2007

Cruises

You might want to check CruiseCritic.com for information

Cruises

One and two night cruises are rare. They usually only happen when a ship repositions from one home port to another and is in between itineraries, or a similar situation such as a new ship ready earlier than expected, etc. I did a quick search and found only one going out of Florida (Miami) for one night in December (the 15th), but none in January.

universal 360

Hi, I read on the Universal Studios site that there is a new show called universal 360 for this year, i%26#39;m really excited as we will be going there in Sept so will be able to see it!! Has anybody seen it yet? If so what exactly does it involve? Many thanks.

universal 360

It is the end of the evening show with fireworks and laser light show that will take place around the Universal logo globe.

universal 360

My wife and i saw the show a couple of weeks ago during technical tests.

In the lagoon in Universal Studios they have erected 4 Huge white globes which during the show images are projected on to them and most of the buildings. There are fireworks and lasers all in time with the music.

It%26#39;s a pretty good show and well worth stopping in the park for, although they still have to go along way to beat the show at Epcot.

There are a couple of videos of the show on www.youtube.com

thank you for your responses, i%26#39;m looking forward to it. It sounds really good, we love fireworks and lasers so both together is a bonus!!! I agree that Epcots is a really good show, we actually enjoy all of the Disney fireworks shows they are breathtaking. Thanks again.

Moderate Disney Resorts

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are going to Disney in October and will be staying off property for a week (timeshare) and would like to spend 2 nights on property. I don%26#39;t think we can afford the Deluxe resorts so I am wondering if you can help us decide on one of the deluxe resorts - Carribean Beach, Port Orleans and there might be one more. Thanks!

Moderate Disney Resorts

I%26#39;m trying to type too fast. I meant to say we%26#39;re looking to stay at a moderate resort.... any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

Moderate Disney Resorts

Hello squishydog,

My favorite moderate Disney resort is the Port Orleans with the Carribean Beach coming in second and the Coronado Springs third. The grounds are beautiful at the Port Orleans and is a boat ride away from Downtown Disney. If you have any other questions don%26#39;t hesitate to ask!

Port Orleans gets my vote as well. French side #1, Riverside #2.

Since it%26#39;ll be your boyfriend and yourself I think French Quarter is a good choice however, when traveling with children I prefer Riverside. I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll be getting alot of opnions here to help you better decide.

Could I ask what timeshare you are stating at?

Port Orleans French Quarter has a lot of romantic nooks and crannies in the landscaped gardens, and it%26#39;s a short boat ride to Downtown Disney, where the night time action is. It would be a great location for the two of you. You have access to all the amenities of both the French Quarter and Riverside, including all the Port Orleans pools. The French Quarter is also the first pickup and drop off point for the Port Orleans bus transportation, so your chances of getting a seat in the morning are better, and you%26#39;re the first ones off after a long day in the parks.

we%26#39;re staying at the Marriot Grand Vista - (my wonderful boss is unable to use her timeshare this year so she let me trade in!) so since we%26#39;ll be staying for free during the week, we thought we%26#39;d go on site for a weekend

Lucky you squishydog!

Another vote for Port Orleans.

Port Orleans is nice, but Coronado Springs is ABSOLUTELY our favorite Moderate. The resort is beautiful, and the foodcourt is unique. The pool area is the best in all of Disney. So, before you make your decision, check some of the threads for Coronado Springs Resort. It is fabulous!!!!!!!

  • visas, please help

Just reading a topic concerning visas for uk visitors to US and I am now in a state of panic. We are due to travel in 3 weeks time and all have the new type of passports, so I thought we would all qualify for the Visa Waiver Programme. Reading the topic set me thinking as in 1993 my husband was taken in for questioning by the police (accusations made by my exhusband that I%26#39;d rather not go into) but he was released with no convictions. We are not sure if this qualifies as %26#39;being arrested%26#39; and if it does from what I have read he would need to apply for a visa, BUT would we get it through in time. As we were involved with a childcare committee he had to obtain a Crimminal Record Bureau check in 1994, which looks into any convictions and there were no problems then. Not sure if I should ring embassey or just hope for the best. If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

    Thanks Allie

    visas, please help

    hi

i am also traveling out to florida in june and my boyfriend has been arrested for dui 2 years ago.

i phoned the embassy and they said if you have ever been arested and or convicted you need to go to your local police station for some type of check then it takeds40 days to get an appoitment at the us embassy to apply for the visa.

i am in a panic as WE DONT HAVE TIME TO APPLY FOR THIS VISA SO I HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY FRIENDS TO JUST TICK NO ON THE VISA WAIVER FORM ON THE PLANE WHEN IT ASKS IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN ARRESTED ETC.

APPARENTLEY THEY WONT BE ABLE TO TELL .

    GOOG LUCK.

    visas, please help

You will be fingerprinted and have your photo taken when you go through immigaration though and they may check against a data bank here.

Hi there we are waiting on an an appointment with the embassy as hubby has a careless driving charge. Your best bet would be to get the subject access form from your local police station. It will cost 拢10 and does say it takes up to 40 days but shouldnt take near this long. This will list all convictions. If this comes back clear then you can rest easy as there is nothing on record about your hubby. If it does show something then its up to you to risk it or not. Heaps of people, with convictions, say they have been through customs and just walked through immigration with no problems and then you do get the odd horror story of people being turned arround.....

Hope this helps a wee bit :-/

Hi, well I spent a lot of time agonising over what to do, but in the end decided to ignore it and do nothing. Glad we did, got in with no probs whatsoever and I am sure there would have been loads of probs trying to get a visa beforehand as it sounded very complicated. Obviously every situation is different, but for us it was better to do nothing, hope it works out for you.

    Allie

Bobblehead, just wondered if your boyfriend had any problems gaining entry to the usa without a visa back in June? Thanks .

    Orange Lake Resort

Has anyone stayed at this resort. Looks large and pretty nice. Have a large family and like the space part of it. How far from Disney and Universal?

    Thanks

    Orange Lake Resort

I haven%26#39;t stayed there, but I%26#39;ve driven by many times. You are about 3-4 miles west of the main Disney entrance on Hwy 192.

If traffic is good, it will be about a 10 minute commute to Disney property. If you are coming when it%26#39;s crowded, take a left off of 192 on to Black Lake Road (about 1 mile east of the resort) and when Black Lake Road dead ends at Sherberth, take a left on Sherberth. This will bring you up to a traffic light which is the start of the Osceola Parkway. You can access all of Disney property from here, or take the OP to I-4 to get to Universal. During busy times, Hwy 192 can back up all the way from the Disney entrance to west of Black Lake Road between 8-10am, when everyone is going to the parks.

If traffic is good, Universal will be about 15-20 minutes away. You can take Hwy 192 or the Osceola Parkway to I-4 and take I-4 east to Universal.

    Orange Lake Resort

I never stayed her before but will be staying in july (24-31) on timeshare promotions youcan also read lots of reviews on tripadvisor if search for it most of revews were goof people complain about alot of petty things only thing that did alarm me was the fact that almost everyone complained about being in the older buildings which i totally understand unfortunely you are not assigned a room until you arrive so that made me think that the orange lake assign thier guest (anyone that is not a timeshare older) to the older units so i called and they so no they do not do that of coarse i did expect a truthful answer so in that deparment am just going to ask god for favor.

    good luck

also am not sure if the timeshare promo was such a good deal but at time i thought that was only way to visit the resort

I haven%26#39;t been there, but I sent my husband and his buddies for a golf trip as there are 4 golf courses on premises. My husband said that the accomodations were wonderful. He stayed in a 3 bedroom in the ';North Village';. He said it was huge! He didn%26#39;t use any ammenties besides the golf courses, but he said the pools looked very nice. The only thing that might be a draw back is that the resort is so big that everything is very spread out. Depending on where your room assignment is , you may have to take your car even for the pool.

I%26#39;m an owner there and I love the place. Lots of resort activities for all ages. The Villas are large. Publix supermarket is right outside. It about 3 mile from World Drive but the triffic on 192 can be bad at peak times. However, there is a shortcut that leads you to Animal kingdom resort as i have discovered here on this site.

Universal is about 30-45 min away, taking into account traffic. Although the resort has shuttles on site and to the parks, I recommend you rent a car. Orange Lake is huge but not cramped like other places.

My husband %26amp; daughter stayed there with my in-laws and they really enjoyed it. In fact, my in-laws bought a time share there. It is a HUGE complex and the units were good sized.

Check out www.redweeks.com before you go so that you know what resells are going for and you don%26#39;t get talked into buying a unit.

hi, we will be going here june 23 - 30 thru a rci exchange, i have read some good and some bad so i hope it will be ok.

    Hi everyone

I have posted before about this property, it is very nice but far too big, we had to drive to the pools, which is not a holiday for me. The staff were not friendly, it took us 20 minutes to get to universal, I couldnt fault the rooms, very nice and spacious. If you are going at the hight of season, be aware the pool areas get crowded, we went easter and spent one week at the resort and a total of 3 hours by the pool, it was just too crowded, the was not even floor space to sit. I wouldnt go back to this resort, sorry

    toni

We just returned from a week at Orange Lake on May 12. We loved it! We are a family of six and found it to be very spacious. Yes the resort is large, however they have great shuttle transportation. There is just so much to do. My son and husband played in basketball competitions, my daughter played in hoola hoop contests, we played mini-golf. I%26#39;ll be quite honest with you, my children ages are 13, 9, 5, 3 and they had way more fun at the resort than at any of the Disney parks or Universal parks we went to. We are thinking about going back, and just doing things onsite and staying away from the crazy parks. No matter what anyone says, Parks are not a vacation. Our best days were spent by the pool, golfing, playing basketball, etc. Without fail everytime we were at the parks, someone was crying or fighting or complaining. Our best family memories were relaxing at Orange Lake.

I just recently was at Orange Lake. We loved it! We had a 3 bedroom unit in the North Village. It was very nice and my kids loved it! I think some ppl may be very picky because I found no faults in this place.

It%26#39;s great-- the suites are huge. Beyond the bedrooms being huge, they have large living/dining rooms plus patios, so there%26#39;s just general floorplan space that%26#39;s nice. They also just opened a new water park there with a lazy river and slides and things.

    Destin Funny Stories

I posted this topic last year and it was a hit.

The first year we came to Destiin my 19 year old daughter and a young male friend of the family were walking on the beach at night. That year there was a high ridge of sand and the water was about 2 to 3 ft below in some areas. She had not been on the beach in the day time so didn%26#39;t know this. She slid head first down the ridge to the water as he continued to talk to her. When they returned to the condo she was wet sand head to toe. So much for romance.

    Destin Funny Stories

2004 we are sitting at the bar in Back Porch watching the NCAA basketball tournament. My wife is wearing an Illini shirt and 2 guys start a converstion with us. (We%26#39;ve been there too long, mind you). He says he went to Missouri and his wife went to Ole Miss. I look at her feet and make a comment that she%26#39;s wearing shoes? Anyway, he thinks it%26#39;s funny and she doesn%26#39;t.

Fast forward to March 2005. We are sitting at the bar in Back Porch watching the NCAA basketball tournament (imagine that). I turn around to see the same guys and wives from last year and I floor her my stating ';I%26#39;ll bet you went to Ole Miss';. She%26#39;s stunned! Then her hubby recognizes us. Small world!

    Orange Lake

We%26#39;re off to Orange Lake for teh first time soon - any advice or info on the resort?

    Thanks

    Orange Lake

We went to Orange Lake a couple of years ago and loved it. The villas are very spacious - ours had two bedrooms, one with two queen size beds and one with a king size and two good size bathrooms. There are a number of pools on the complex and of course the golf, which we weren%26#39;t into at all but it was nice to have a villa overlooking the links. It is in a good position for Disney but the traffic can get quite heavy going into the parks in the morning so set off early, or use the shortcut via sherbeth road (off the 192 just opposite splendid china) This road takes you straight into disneyworld the back way and cuts out loads of traffic queues. There is also a Publix supermarket right next door to orange lake which has everything you%26#39;ll need if you%26#39;re planning to be self catering. We thought that the quality of accomodation was very good and you get good sized appliances, fridge with ice maker, washing machine and tumble drier etc.

I would recommend you buy the %26#39;brits guide to orlando + walt disneyworld%26#39; this was our bible both times we went to florida and its full of up to date tips and reccommendations.

    Have fun!

    Orange Lake

hi we just got back 2 weeks ago, we had a great time. the place is HUGE!!!!! you might want to rent a car becuse it is so bi. nice clean rooms and clean pools. have fun and like they said use the shortcut. if you have any questions let me know.

My wife and I own there and we love it. Lots of activities, restraunts, new water park has opened. One thing though, the resort is huge, and if you are not driving there I would suggest renting a car. They do have a bus system within the resort and I here it is very good, but I prefer to have my own vehicle. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.

    Thanks very much.

Whe you say use the shortcut do you mean to go anywhere or just if going to Disney (which we wont be).

Publix is our favourite chain in Florida the deli take away subs are unbelievable, or at least were both time we%26#39;ve been before.

I%26#39;ll go check out that route on the yahoo maps to see where it is.

What else is down that neck of the woods of interest. We are at Vistan last time a bit further up the road and never reall ventured down Kissimmee way at all.

Staying in west Kissimmee but not doing Disney, , ,

If you%26#39;re doing Universal, its going to be a bit of a hike. You may need to use the shortcut through Disney just to shorten the trip to Universal, lol!

Of course, you may just be visiting Central Florida, not the theme parks, like bssd likes to do. Have a great trip!

No, we went to Disney when my son was 8 and he was bored then. He%26#39;s now 13 so there%26#39;s no chance.

Anyway we%26#39;ve got the 14 day Flex tickets to gitter about with.

Wot them last time three years ago and it was great to able to go in and then just come away without killing yourself in the heat and go back another day.

We stayed there a year ago May with family in a 2 bedroom 2 bath unit over looking the golf course. We LOVED it and plan to go again in 2008. You could see the fireworks at Disney through your living room! Great pools, slide, pool volleyball and basketball, lake with jet ski and boat rentals and sandy beach, the water park was being built when we were there along with the resort%26#39;s own access to Disney. There is a theater, bingo by one of the pools, mini golf, ping pong and many other amenities and activities. One suggestion would be is to try and get a newer unit when you check in. This was never a problem with us as that is what the person checking us in said we already had (through a RCI exchange), but you may want to request this. I never saw an older unit, but that was a suggestion that I found helpful on this site when I was planning our trip. You%26#39;ll have a great time!

Hey EddieK,how you doing? Glad you remember why I go there. Been meaning to ask you, read an article on your town on Local 6 that you are the strip club Capital of Central Florida, and you people want to change that with ordinances to place them where people think they should be. Pretty much gone?

    Sanford Airport to Int. Drive

Whats the best and cheapest way to get there and how long does it take ?

    THANKS

    Sanford Airport to Int. Drive

    Just one person?

    Sanford Airport to Int. Drive

    Yes mate,and no car

You will see your question in many of the tourist tack shops around Florida. it reads like this;-

There are three kinds of jobs done here. Good Cheap and Quick.

    You may chose ay two.

If its Good and Quick, it will not be Cheap,

It its Quick and Cheap it will not be Good

If it Cheap and Good it will not be Quick.

So which two do you want?????????????

    Cheap and Quick !

    hi vacationeruk,

we used mears from orlando to i-drive and i think that they do from sanford as well. go on there website and find out or take a taxi from sanford it will take about hour an hour

    pam

Do i need to book anything or can I just jump on a bus at the airport when i get there ?

You don%26#39;t have to book in advance, unless you are arriving in the evening. Daytime, you might find someone who has already booked a car or van and will share if you pay half.

    nice but too nice restaurant?

Okay, so I know there are like a million posts for restaurants but I%26#39;m hoping for more specifics. My husband %26amp; I are coming to St. Augustine for the 1st time for our anniversary. We are coming from Clearwater/Tampa area, so while we love the beach we%26#39;re used to that stuff. I%26#39;m looking for a nice restaurant with exceptional food, but I don%26#39;t want overly fancy. That%26#39;s just not us. Romantic is good, but not too proper, catch me? =) I%26#39;ve heard much about this Opus 39 but upon looking at their site, they look really hgh class, and it doesn%26#39;t look like a place we%26#39;d enjoy ourselves in. Can anyone give me some suggestions as well as just really ';cool'; places to eat for the rest of the time. Maybe a place with a rustic feel or something. Any particular taverns in the historic district. Thanks in advance for any suggestions ya%26#39;ll can give me!!!

    nice but too nice restaurant?

This is a common question; and there are common answers. Look on the front page of this forum and especially Mahoney has outlined pubs, restaurants, etc. - all that are in the Old City and good ones. This question was asked just this week - the answers will be the same.

Have a great time. I wouldn%26#39;t eat at:

    OC Whites

Tavern on the Bay - yuck !

Definitely NOT Santa Maria - yuckier AND a rip off! !

Conch House (great for cocktails and really cool)

    Fiddler%26#39;s (hit or miss)

    White Lion

    Aculpulco

Mango Mangos on Anastasia (waiter was rubbing his nose as he

delivered food - totally turned off)

    Have fun!

    nice but too nice restaurant?

We are from the Tampa Bay area also, Temple Terrace to be exact. We were just in St. Augustine in May and even though our service wasnt the best, you would probably like AIA Ale House, it has that micro brewery feel, we tryed the beer sampler and it was very interesting and fun. You must check out a new little place that was my favorite called Sangria%26#39;s, they didnt serve food yet but I understand they were suppose to soon. It is upstairs on St. George Street and they had the best Mojitio I have ever had. They have a great sound system. play great jazz tunes and have comfy sofas and chairs to sit in. Also, dont miss Denoel%26#39;s a little pastry shop on Charlotte, best eclairs EVER! If you like french onion soup, La Paviollion has the best, plus Oysters Lapavillon which are rich and yummy. Have fun!

All sound like great suggestions, I especially appreciate the ';where NOT to go%26#39;s';. Nothing worse than feeling like you%26#39;ve wasted time on vacation.

Thought I%26#39;d let any one know %26amp; ask about this place I read about a little bit ago that we%26#39;re really excited about. Taberna Del Gallo. It%26#39;s right on St George street, only open Friday %26amp; Saturday nights and sounds just too cool with candle only lighting and pirates %26amp; wenches. Maybe cheesy to some, but sounds like fun to us! Maybe someone has heard of it?

Also, a totally different subject, but how%26#39;s the parasailing up there? We%26#39;ve always wanted to go but haven%26#39;t gone in our home town so we thought what better time?! I%26#39;m going to call Smile High Parasailing... because it%26#39;s the only one I found.

    Thanks again ya%26#39;ll!

    ~Marie

yes, we went to that little place, I think Mahoney had written something about it before our trip and we went in, it was neat, just had benches and wood tables, the servers were all dressed in period attire, no air but it was in May so it was cool. Great sangria, we went in the afternoon before our dinner and before the ghost of Mantaza ship and we hoped to go back when we had finished, one of the ladies said they would be open until 11:00. Unfortunately, when we went back around 10:30 and there were lots of pirates and lots of rrrrrrrr.......going on but they had a rope in front of the door and when we asked if we could join in they said they were closed, I mentioned that we had been there eariler in the day and had been invited back but that didnt seem to matter, maybe it is a clickish thing or maybe the pirates were just tired from entertaining tourist all day, I could understand that! Anyway, it is definately a place to check out.

Since you have the beach at home , stay in the historic district and try one of these casual places:

--A1A Aleworks, sometimes crowded on weekends but nice and casual. Good outdoor seating.

--Columbia - This is a chain and I believe there is one in Tampa but the service is very good, attentive but casual. Great house salads and mojitos/sangrias. I am often disappointed at the beef and pork but the chicken dishes and shrimp is very good.

--McKnights Pubic House - great food, nice service. Tell the owner it is your anniversary or call ahead for the only outdoor table. This is very casual but a step above usual ';pub'; stuff. Nice ambience. The owners are nice and will make a big deal for your anniversary.

--Old City House --Perhaps a bit more dressy than you wanted but this is a nice little place with good food and drink.

--On the island, Gypsy Cab is very casual, a bit loud perhaps and no outdor seating but casual and very nice food.

--Cortesses Bistro on San Marco - Great food and outdoor romantic dining.

I agree completely with LNs list of places to avoid. I would add Barnacle Bills to that list myself. Too many great places to even consider those on the list.

On most sites it doesn%26#39;t mention it having a gym and sauna but on one or two it does.

Can anyone confirm if it does or doesn%26#39;t ??

Does it have a gym and sauna ??

Forgot to mention it as Rodeway Inn Interntaional !

Does it have a gym and sauna ??

Iwould not expect that at a Rodeway. Just a basic Motel.

San Diego Bans Smoking on the Beach

I participate in the annual beach cleanups here in Destin, our group always cleans Norriego Point. The cigarette butts along the waterline are amazing - literally thousands!

I can only hope that one day beach smoking is banned here too.

    washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20…

San Diego Bans Smoking on the Beach

    Amen and amen!!!

Why smokers think the beach is their own personal ashtray is beyond me.

San Diego Bans Smoking on the Beach

We were making sand castles one year on the beach and gathering shells and sticks to decorate it. When I looked at the back of it my young granddaughter had cigarette butts stuck in the castle. YUCK

I think most folks don%26#39;t realize that those little cotten fibers you see in the filters are actually a form of plastic and can take up to 10 years to decompose. But then again, the folks leaving them around are probably the same ones leaving all the soda and beer cans on the beach that I picked up while I was there! :)

    Ban smoking beaches.....absolutely!

Well, dang and dad gum it! I guess I will have to stop shooting boom boxes and gators and take up shooting smokers.

WARNING: If you are smoking on the beach and see a crazed woman with a 12 guage, in a camo bikini (with matching visor) take cover!!!

    holiday surf and raquet club

Has anyone been to Holiday Surf and Raquet? We are looking for a beachfront condo but many are booked. We plan an August trip. Have the beached here been restored since the hurricane? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

    holiday surf and raquet club

The beaches at Holiday Surf are not part of the renourishment project.

I don%26#39;t know when in August you are planning, but you will find more choices toward the end of the month, except of course, the holiday.

    holiday surf and raquet club

    beachgrl36,

I was there in late May, and I recommend it...

Do you mind my asking why you recommend it? Especially if it isn%26#39;t part of the renourishment project.

Is there plenty of beach left?

Also, I notice that they give you two beach chairs and an umbrella with each rental. Did you have any problem with them all being taken?

    Thanks.

    ARMom,

The beaches have not been restored at Holiday Surf and Racquet Club and are plenty more narrow than they were before the storms last season. However, there is still a decent strip of beach directly in front of HSRC, A LOT better strip than say the Jetty East or Aegean.

We were there the week before Memorial Day weekend, so the condo wasn%26#39;t near the capacity of what it will be this summer, so it is hard to say how the beach will be able to handle all the tourists. However, I can tell you while we were there the beach service managed to get the majority of chair/umbrellas in one row. They did set up 8-10 umbrellas in a second row for the stragglers. I%26#39;ve been to Destin quite a few times and mainly stay on Holiday Isle, and I could tell no difference in the quality of the beach/gulf. The only difference is that there is less beach behind you as you are sitting in the chairs enjoying the scenery in front of you.

As far as getting chairs, we had two units and had no problems getting two sets of chairs/umbrellas together. They start setting up at 7-7:30 a.m., just get out there then and throw some towels on your chair to claim %26#39;em. But don%26#39;t be one of those people who reserve a prime spot just to spend an hour or two at the beach...;)

Keep in mind, all this was before prime summer season, so I%26#39;m not sure how it will be handled as the condo gets more and more busy. Otherwise, the tennis courts and shuffelboard were completed while we were there, the grills are nice, the grounds are kept very clean and the staff are great. Plenty of laundry facilities and an efficient linen exchange as well.

    I%26#39;d recommend HSRC to anyone...

Play18, thanks so much. That reassures me a little. We will be there at the height of the season (July 4 week). I hope it%26#39;s wonderful!! This is our first trip back in 10 years. The last time we didn%26#39;t stay on Holiday Isle, but a little further down the coast.

Armom, I was down on Holiday Isle last year on the 4th of July week and I never seen it sooo crowded. We had never been down over the 4th and was really surprised at the crowdes.

We just returned from there this morning. It was nice. Not a 4-star hotel, but clean. The beach there was GREAT!! They are gaining more and more beach everyday. We went with two small children and they loved it. The pool is nice and clean. The beach is not a far walk from the pool. We rented room 312 through the owner. Beach front, one bedroom, nice. If you rent through the hotel itself you will get free beach chairs and setup. If not it is $20 a day. I would stay again.

This places seems to not get great reviews on here. We are looking into staying here in October. How annoying is the screened in balcony? I have never stayed at a place that did this. Is the pool large? Any other helpful info. is appreciated. We are really debating staying here or The Islander (I stayed there a few months ago.) or going into Ft. Walton.

    Is the Aegean open yet?

In late May, the Aegean had a TON of work left still, but by now I%26#39;d bet they are close to finishing up.

I will say that the beach there was pretty much non-existant. You get off the wooden walkway and you are literally two feet from the water line. Not much beach there at all.

On the flip-side, the best strip of beach on Holiday Isle that I saw was in front of the Inlet Reef Club and Destin on the Gulf.

    11th & Collins

We have booked a room on 11th and Collins. Is this a good location?

    11th %26amp; Collins

Yes it is. It is in the middle of everything and one short block from the beach. What hotel did you book?

    11th %26amp; Collins

It%26#39;s through a rental group called Blue Ocean. It%26#39;s a Penthouse apt, not a hotel. One of the guys in our group found it through a contact of his.

    50% off at Restaurant.com

New 50% off code for restaurant.com: 35703 good until 7/16/06

    50% off at Restaurant.com

I was surfing ebay and actually saw someone selling these certificates ! Can you believe that. I felt like emailing the person bidding and telling them where to purchase them.

Again lilbunnygirl thans for all your info. I have a collection of your advise in a folder to take with us!

    50% off at Restaurant.com

Lilbunny...when you say the code expires, do the certificates also expire, or are they good once they are bought? I have never tried Restaurant.com,but am thinking about it since we are coming to PCB for a week this Sunday! Also, can you use as many as you want per visit, or are they retricted to one per visit? How do you get the code to get 50%off? Thanks for all your infinite knowledge...I have been lurking for a few days on here %26amp; have already learned a lot!

No, the certificate is good for a year from the date of purchase. The discount code is the only thing that expires :)

You may only use one at a time, and apparently Hammerhead Fred%26#39;s is particularly adamant about this, Lisastyling says that even seated at seperate tables with seperate checks they wouldn%26#39;t allow her group to use more than one! Which stinks, if you ask me.

I get the discount codes from people on TA Vegas who acquire them by some mysterious means and share them out with the group :)

Well thank you for sharing!! And thanks for the tips! Oh, do the same restaurants always have coupons, or is there a chance that they might not have one the next week? Just wondering if I should go ahead before Sunday just in case!

As far as I know they always have the same certificates on offer, so as long as you buy them before the 50% off expires on sunday, you%26#39;re in good shape!

I have read a couple of time about these certificates and almost bought them the last time you gave us a code. I don%26#39;t have a problem only using one, but I am a little concerned about the minimum purchase requirements. Does this amount count the certificate or does the purchase amount have to be over and above the certificate amount ?

    Thanks,

    Candy

kuponklipper - no the minimum purchase ammount is the total bill. We used a $10 one at Original Pancake House in Vegas with a minimum purchase of $25. Our total bill was $30, so we paid $20 cash and used the $10 certificate. Which was nice, since we%26#39;d paid $1.50 for it! :)

I am confused about the certificates. If I purchase two $10 certificates can I combine them and use them togrther to get $20 off of total bill?

No, you can only use one per meal. But you%26#39;re still paying $5 (if you use the 50% off code) for a $25 gift certificate, etc... so it%26#39;s saving a good amount of money regardless

    Westgate Lakes Resort Orlando, Fl.

Hi my family of four 2 kids and 2 adults, plus in laws will be staying here mid August. Is there a particular unit or building you would recommend. Do not like much noise since we go to bed around 10:30 p.m. to hit the parks early. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is there a particular area that timeshare owners are given? We are exchanging and just wondering, since at other resorts this is the case. Thanks.

    Westgate Lakes Resort Orlando, Fl.

From the reviews I%26#39;ve seen, try to get a room on a higher floor and not overlooking one of the pools.

    Westgate Lakes Resort Orlando, Fl.

we were owners here for 5 years and have stayed in 3 different buildings. Building 700 is near reception and overlooking one of the main pools this will be too noisy for you. Building 300 is one of their newest buildings , it is nice quiet enough and if you get on floor 3 or up you should be able to see lake and pools. But the best room we stayed in was building 500 we had a lovely view looking right on to the lake and it was very quiet. You do need to watch as quite a lot of the rooms only look onto the car park which is not very nice. But there are also a lot of nice ones looking on to the lake which is what we liked best. Rooms just seem to be allocated on arrival, with ownders getting their own rooms first. We really loved this resort so hopefully you will too .

macgill thanks for the info. Do you remember what room you got at building 500. How far is it to the Disney parks. I also read somewhere here, that it is possible to see Disney%26#39;s fireworks?

    Again, thanks alot.

can%26#39;t remeber which room we had in the 500 building but it was on 3rd floor, usually the rooms at either end of the building are the ones with the worst views sometimes the car park . If you don%26#39;t like the room you are given just go back to front desk (will often be a big queue and ask for a different one)

It is not far too disney parks , 10 mins up I4 or you can go along a back road can%26#39;t remeber the name of it but you will soon find it. And yes it is possible to see fireworks from certain points of westgate lakes but sorry Ican%26#39;t remeber where is best for this. Universal and Seaworld are both very close as well.

DO NoT DO IT.... read my review that I just posted. I use to own here and now it has been taken over by the ghetto (sp?) Gangs now. SCARY,,, go somewhere else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we use to own here also but we went to the palace i don%26#39;t understand as much money they charge you for everything that they can%26#39;t get this stuff under control when your on vacation with your family i didn%26#39;t experience anything like that i hope that they have not let the resort go like that cause i know that they check your parking passes if this is true they need the management to step up and do there job before they lose alot of owners %26amp; guest let%26#39;s get it together westgate

  • What is the cheapest way to get from airport to hotel?

We are staying at the Swan next week and there are 8 of us. We need a ride both ways. Any ideas?

    thanks

What is the cheapest way to get from airport to hotel?

Too bad Disney%26#39;s Magical Express doesn%26#39;t go to the Swan; you%26#39;d all be able to ride for free with that.

Probably one of those mini-vans from Mears or another company would be your best bet.

What is the cheapest way to get from airport to hotel?

The cheapest way is to take the Lynx bus-you have to transfer-I think it%26#39;s about $1.25 each and takes about 2 hours to get to the TTC at the Magic Kingdom. Well,it%26#39;s cheap!(www.golynx.com)

If you want to book a mini van,we have used Tiffany TownCar,Florida towncar and Quicksilver. All have reasonable prices, make a grocery stop on the way, have clean cars and safe drivers.

The absolute cheapest but probably least convienient way to get from the airport to the Swan would be using public transportation (Lynx bus system) You would board the Lynx route to Disney where you would then transfer to the Disney bus system to get directly to the Swan. Lynx bus fare is $1.50 per person. Make sure you visit the website or call to make sure you board the correct Lynx bus at the airport:

    www.golynx.com

    or call 407-841-LYNX

Otherwise, you can take a taxi cab or Mears shuttle transportation.

    Have Fun!

Which airport are you flying into, one is 20 miles further away then the other.

    HI!

I found - YOUR RIDE van service(866-240-RIDE) or http://www.yourride.net. They offered us 45.00 total each way for 6 of us. Have a great time!

    help please

    Hi guys,

This is my 1st post on this site, so am hoping I am doing it right. I am tring to plan a trip to the Keys in September, can any one please answer me a couple of questions 1) does anyone know where i can rent a villa on the Keys, most places I have come across are just in Orlando, 2) Does the Keys have problems with hurricanes in September?

    Many Thanks

    help please

Yes, you can rent a villa, although most people down here don%26#39;t call them that, which might be way you%26#39;re having trouble finding references to it. We call them condos, and you can find ones for rent throughout the Keys. Single-family homes are also an option, particularly in parts of the Lower Keys where we don%26#39;t have condos.

www.vrbo.com (vacation rentals by owner) is a good web site to start with. I%26#39;m sure someone else will chip in with the others, which escape me right now.

And yes, it%26#39;s possible we%26#39;ll have a hurricane in September. It is, historically, the busiest month for hurricane activity.

    help please

oh thank you for that Kitty, what month would you recommend as the best to travel down there, as from your comments I dont particulary think September is a wise move!

During the winter months here in MN (November - March) we have a much greater chance of a snowstorm. Just as in the gulf and atlantic, there is a much greater chance of hurricanes from June through November.

There is no guranty that there will or will not be a huricanne, it%26#39;s just that there is a better chance of one during the season. You could some in Sept, and have some great weather, and you could go and get chased out.

If you have a choice of when you can go, I think I%26#39;d shoose some other time, maybe December - May.

Hurricane season is a nice time to travel here, assuming there are no actual hurricanes. :) The prices are good, the crowds are small, and you%26#39;ll find us at our laidback best. That said, things might be too slow for you. November and December are better bets -- there%26#39;s more going on, the weather is better, and the prices and crowds are still manageable.

    Vacation in September-help needed

Hi all, we%26#39;ll be coming over for a vacation to Naples for 2 weeks at the beginning of September, and we have a couple of questions?

    1) is Naples as relaxed as the rest of Florida? For example, are shorts acceptable attire for the majority of places?

    2) after hitting St Petes for a few years, we are after somewhere a bit quieter, I assume that Naples will fit the bill.

    3) Is it worth spending that bit extra to stay at a Hotel on the beach, or are we better off moving inland a bit and getting better value for money?

Thanks for all your help in advance, and here%26#39;s to our 9.5 hour flight in September.

    Vacation in September-help needed

You may want to check on the current beach conditions around Naples. There has been a red tide outbreak. It sort of moves around a bit but Vanderbuilt Beach was one of the ones badly affected.

Saffys-mum should have on the spot info for you. You can also try www.naplesnews.com and www.nbc-2.com for local Naples news. When I checked today I saw nothing about the red tide in the area and the beach cams showed emply beaches, but at least you can ask before booking.

    Vacation in September-help needed

Just so you can floow, here%26#39;s the website for water conditions:

    http://research.myfwc.com

Just click on the blue header ';Red Tide Current Status'; and the most recent data will pop. Last post date was July 7 and it is usually updated once a week.

    sigh.... that word was supposed to be %26#39;followed%26#39;

I promise I will someday learn to type.

Ft. Myers Beach is clear of algae and no red tide

Thanks for the info, when staying at St Pete%26#39;s we would almost always get reports of the red tide, but never really saw it. Don%26#39;t want to tempt fate, but a bit like hurricanes, it%26#39;s too hard to predict.

Fort Myers would be another option. We just want somewhere laid back where if you are wearing a certain attire people wouldn%26#39;t care.

I just got back from Naples Sunday night and the red tide had come to Vanderbilt Beach earlier in the week. We went to Naples Beach without a problem. I would imagine it will work it%26#39;s way down eventually. The red tide had been in Ft. Myers before it reached Naples but seems to be gone from there as a previous posted stated. Perhaps or at least hopefully it will be gone by September.

Naples is a very relaxed area and yes, I notice many people wearing shorts in reataurants. I%26#39;ve never been to St. Pete%26#39;s but Naples is very quite. No problem there.

As for hotels, well I%26#39;ve never stayed in one since I have a home there but September will probably still have reasonable rates so I might opt for the beach front hotel just for the luxury of not having to drive to the beach if going to the beach is what you desire.

Cheers to your long flight! I am going to Italy in October and I%26#39;m dreading those 8 plus hours.

    Enjoy Naples!

Thanks Mama924, have you been to Europe before?

    Hi Kev,

    You%26#39;re welcome.

No, this is my first time to Europe and I%26#39;m crazy excited. It was a last minute decision when I was researching for a visit next year and noticed Alitalia was having an airfare special. We just booked it and went from there.

Please enjoy your stay in Naples and if you have any quwstions I could help you with, please feel free to ask.....mama

Well, you will absolutely love Italy. Some of the friendliest people around. Just be warned though, it is quite expensive, and this coming from someone who lives in the UK. So bring plenty of money. But you will absolutely love it there.

I also am considering a week vacation over Labor Day weekend and the week following.

Aside from the red tide, what will the weather be like?? Will it be totally oppressive? (heat and humidity)

    Thanks for the info

Has the Essex House in SoBe gone downhill since 2001?

    Hi folks,

I travelled to miami in 2001 and stayed in the Essex House, which I really enjoyed. We are thinking about going there again this october- but the reviews on here are really bad!

I know it is an old hotel and relatively speaking has older fittings etc. But has anyone revisited it in the past few years and noticed it has gone downhill?

If you are able to, could you recommend another cheapish hotel in the Art Deco district?

    your advice would be helpful!

    nic

Has the Essex House in SoBe gone downhill since 2001?

Unfortunately, the Essex House has indeed gone downhill. I stayed many times in the past few years. I noticed a serious decline in January of this year when I found the rooms much dirtier and the service has become unfriendly.

I always booked a Jacuzzi Suite - it was always a quiet, comfortable stay. Now it seems that partiers book up these suites (4-6 to a room) and party all night in them - staff has been unresponsive to my requests to have someone ask the noisemakers to quiet down while on hotel property.

Would recommend Blue Moon hotel - just across the street and one block south of 10th.

Has the Essex House in SoBe gone downhill since 2001?

Ooops, just posted the same question, should have looked first I guess.

    Rolling Hills Villa

We have rented a Villa at Rolling Hills for the end of July,,,Just wondering if it is a safe area and how close to Universal and Disney?

    Rolling Hills Villa

Hi, I found a website with a list of the various subdivisions and it says Rolling Hills is near US 192 and Formosa Gardens Rd. Sorry, I can%26#39;t help with safety of the neighborhood but I%26#39;ve been reading this forum for a few months now and the only safety issues I%26#39;ve seen mentioned are in Orlando proper. Commentary seems to be that the areas out around Disney and outside of the city areas of Orlando are fine. You can get a map showing the intersection of US 192 and Formosa Gardens Rd. at mapquest.com

    Hope this helps!

    Disneyland vs Magic Kingdom

I was a child living right next door to Disneyland in Cali. Will I be dissapointed with Magic kingdom in Florida? Are the classic rides as good? Jungle tour, Small world etc?

    Disneyland vs Magic Kingdom

You won%26#39;t be disappointed hanalei princess. I%26#39;ve been to both parks and I much prefer Magic Kingom Disney World. And yes the classic rides are great!

    Disneyland vs Magic Kingdom

Lucky you living next door to Disneyland! I recently have visited Disneyland and have visted WDW MANY times and I can honestly say that if you are comparing Disneyland to MK there are very few differences. MK doesn%26#39;t have Matterhorn Bobsleds but more or less the rides are the same and positioned similarly.

The advantage of WDW over Disneyland is that it has Epcot , Disney Studios and the Animal Kingdom as well which are all worth a visit.

    Enjoy your visit!

In addition to the above posts, when you enter the Walt Disney World area, it is like entering another world. (no pun). The Disney Land park is surrounded by hotels, etc. When you enter the gates of Walt Disney World, you do not feel as though you pulled into an amusement park. The lush grounds, winding roads, lakes, are all beautiful. Your anticipation builds as you travel to the various parks.

I go to Disney frequently, and still get that bit of excitement when we cross over into the Disney area.

I was at Disneyland on May5th 2005 for the 50th anniversary kickoff party with Julie Andrews and Kelsey Grammer. I thought going there was the thrill of a lifetime till I walked through the gates of Disneyworld this past February 8th and realized I had died and gone to theme park heaven.

I much prefer Florida and Disneyworld over Cali and Disneyland. I agree with the last poster that passing through those gates gives you the tingles and you do feel like your in a whole different world.

Counting down the days till I can get back to Disneyworld in January/February 2007.

    Jokelady

Disney World%26#39;s Magic Kingdom (MK) is great but there are a few things you might notice:

    1. MK does not have the Indiana Jones ride

    2. MK does not have the Matterhorn

    3. Many say that Disneyland%26#39;s Pirates of the Caribbean is better than the Magic Kingdom%26#39;s.

4.Many say that Disneyland%26#39;s It%26#39;s A Small World is better than the Magic Kingdoms.

    5. MK still has the Country Bears.

    6. Star Tours is at Disney-MGM Studios, rather than at MK.

    7. ';Honey, I Shrunk the Audience'; is at Epcot, rather than at MK. MK does have a 3-D: ';Mickey%26#39;s Philharmagic'; which gets very good reviews.

    8. Does Disneyland still have ';Toad%26#39;s Wild Ride';? MK does not.

    9. MK does not have the Alice in Wonderland ride.

    10. You cannot get mint juleps in MK

    11. The Toontown area is different.

    12. I believe Disneyland has Fantasmic but, at WDW, Fantasmic is at Disney-MGM Studios.

The biggest difference I%26#39;ve found is that there is so much at Walt Disney World, that you end up sort of rushing through the Magic Kingdom. We once spent four whole days at Disneyland, and that was before they even had ';California Adventure';.

  • Disney Boardwalk Villas

i called yesterday to see how much this place would be for a week and they said $549 a night is this place worth it or not i seen it had like a clown slide but for that amount of money it better have gold framing somewhere in there if we do decide to stay here i will need to pay for this a year in advanced cause we will be in orlando this august maybe i should go take a look at the resort when were there in august

    Disney Boardwalk Villas

Here is a link with good photos:

    http://disneylinks.net/Resorts/Boardwalk/

Have you looked into renting Disney Vacation Club (DVC) points from DVC members? We rented points to stay at Beach Club last year and it was a big savings over the regular reservation price. There is a whole forum dedicated to just this on www.disboards.com. Weekends generally require a lot more points so you might consider a Boardwalk reservation for the weekdays and then go to a moderate for the weekends. Disney will move your luggage for you.

    Disney Boardwalk Villas

For that price pokerolls I would rent a villa at the Yacht and Beach Club located right across the lake from the Boardwalk. The Yacht and Beach Clubs pool beats the Boardwalk hands down as it%26#39;s a 3 acre sand bottom pool with a ship with a slide and waterfalls.

We love to go to the Boardwalk to play, but we choose Yacht and Beach club for our stay.

If your going to spend that kind of money, the Grand Floridian is another good choice.

If you are coming in August, have you booked your hotel yet? Why not stay at one of Disney%26#39;s moderate resorts? Then you can tour each hotel while you are here.

Check the All Ears website, a non-biased view on WDW and its hotels. On it our photos for each of the hotels. The Boardwalk is a beautiful hotel with a great atmosphere, hence the price.

    Enjoy your stay!

You didn%26#39;t mention which size accommodation you would be getting for the $549 per night. That sounds pretty standard for the two bedroom villas at the DVC properties during regular season. If they are quoting you that price for a one bedroom, then it seems high. Keep in mind that if you%26#39;re in a two bedroom, you will have a lot more space and more amenities than you would in a standard hotel room, so that makes it worth paying more money.

Red algae has mostly left the area and the beaches are free of the stuff. Some fish from the most recent fish kill [red tide is in the bay] have been reported, mostly down toward the Lighthouse. The heavy rains this week are helping. TA member Skoorb1 is at Pointe Santo and I did post to him yesterday. Hope he answers soon.

You can check www.nbc-2.com and www.news-press.com for any beach info and I will post any updates on the location of the red tide - which has been down toward Clam Pass and Vanderbuilt Beach near Naples.

    HELP: Beach Report

    thanks a lot for the info . . . . i can%26#39;t wait to get down there :-)

I%26#39;m staying at Tarpon Beach, right next to Pointe Santo, and as I walked east from Pointe Santo to Sandollar I counted at least 8 dead fish, one right in front on Pointe Santo. Not all grouped together, but one every now and then. There are tons of people out enjoying the beach and water (and fishing) so I wouldn%26#39;t worry about it. Walking west toward West Wind Inn I only counted 2 dead fish. I saw absolutely NO red algae, so that is great news.

However, I%26#39;ve been coughing a lot today while sitting on the beach, more so than previous days. We had storms roll through all day yesterday so maybe it kicked something up into the air and it is affecting my allergies and asthma. But I did notice a lot of other people coughing too but please don%26#39;t let that stop you from coming. It%26#39;s still hot, beautiful and wonderful here. We are leaving tomorrow and I%26#39;m so sad!! Wish we could stay another week, but we%26#39;re off to South Beach Miami for a few days before we go back to reality! I%26#39;ll miss Sanibel!

    Have a GREAT time!

Glad the red tide isn%26#39;t too bad, Hawaii. Enjoy SoBe!

Any news on the beach. We are leaving the 19th !!

    directions from Ft. Lauderdale

I look on past posts but could not find anything on this, I remember reading something a while ago. We are flying into Ft. Lauderdale tommorow, is there a best way- easiest way to get to Key west?

    directions from Ft. Lauderdale

Exiting the airport go north on US 1 to I-595. West on I-595 to the Florida Turnpike. Take the Turnpike South. I think the tolls will be about $4.00 ( they may have gone up a little) . It is a much better, faster, safer route than I-95 and it will take you to Florida City south of Miami where it will deposit you back on Route 1 south , which goes all the way to Key West. At one point you will be given the option to go off on another toll road, Card Sound. Some folks like this as it is very rustic and has a very rustic bar/restaurant , (called Alabama Jacks%26#39; I think) but I think most folks prefer to stay on Rt. 1 all the way. iI is two lanes in some spots, four laned in others and there are lots of places to stop and stretch and of course lovely scenery- the Ocean on your left, Gulf on your right. When you get to Marathon, you should be about an hour north of Key West. Enjoy your drive-we%26#39;ll be headed down the following weekend for our annual trip and can%26#39;t wait!

    directions from Ft. Lauderdale

In the event it%26#39;s not too late:

Lulutoo is correct, but here are a couple of more detailed instructions.

After gettin on 595 west, go to exit 8, and exit right, you%26#39;ll eventually sweep up and to the left.

As you%26#39;re heading southbound on Florida%26#39;s Turnpike, I think it%26#39;s bout mile marker 48 or so you%26#39;ll see an exit right toward Homestead. GO!

    Four $1 tolls is right.

Hope all of the above helps.

Thanks for the info. I%26#39;ll be there soon.

On the weekend you should be okay going straight to I-95 and heading south.

We%26#39;ve done both I-95 and the Turnpike (on weekends and weekdays). I will ALWAYS take the Turnpike from now on.

    August weather

    Hello,

I%26#39;ve asked this once before about a month ago or so, but I guess I%26#39;m trying to convince myself that it won%26#39;t be ';that bad'; - exactly how unbearable is the heat in mid August? Is it truly miserable? I%26#39;m finally getting ready to decide whether we%26#39;re going to brave Orlando for our trip or not, so thanks.

    August weather

We%26#39;re going in August also we ususally do hotel pool in the daytime and when the sun starts to go done do the parks if feels so much better cause it is so hot %26amp; humid but you have to have a plan.

    August weather

LM99 we went the first part of June. The humidity did not kick in till the second half of our trip and all I can say is wow! It can be overwhelming and will wipe you out. Make sure you get there early, take breaks and keep everyone hydrated. We did water parks a few times in the afternoons and that was refreshing. Do your serious park touring the first part of your trip before everyone wears out and know you will probably not get everything on your list done.

I am from Arizona and am use to 100 degree temps, but to be honest this heat wiped us out.

That being said, we had a blast and enjoyed our trip. We had to go in June for scheduling reasons, but if I had a choice I would pick a cooler time to go. If I did not have a choice, I would go ahead and go in August and have a great time despite the heat and humidity.

If you can travel another time in the year then do. The heat is unbearable because of the humidity. It is also very crowded. I would avoid the theme parks in the afternoon and just chill by the hotel/villa pool. Then go back in the evening and enjoy the parks after the sun has gone down. The parks are open late (sometimes until midnight) and this is the best time to enjoy the rides.

No hotter than Tennesse, humid until the afternoon shower then pleasant at night.

The parks are always busy all year and August has been quieter the last 2

Thanks so much everyone. I have been driving myself crazy wondering how much worse can it be than it is here in TN; sounds like it will be fairly similar, maybe a bit more intense. I think the idea of staying around the pool during the day and then going to the parks at night sounds good. If we were able to go any other time of the year we would, but that%26#39;s just the way it is for us. Looks like we%26#39;ll probably go ahead with the trip - as long as I don%26#39;t start freaking out again thinking we%26#39;d better go way north instead!

    Funny Stories

    Hi all,

Im enjoying your posts alot. Hoping to go back to Disney in 2007 if all goes well. Was wondering if anyone had any funny vacation stories to share. Thought it might be fun to share them. Thanks!! Disney Dreamer Greenfield, NH

    Funny Stories

    Ok Dreamer, I%26#39;ll go first.

I went to MGM by myself in 1996, and fell in love with Tower of Terror. so the next year, I brought my older sister with me, and PROMISED HER that the people that you see falling and hear screaming weren%26#39;t real. Just a Disney trick. We were ages 47+49. Ok, we got off that thing, and she was in shock.

anyway, we went for a drink, and she said,';Why? why Nancy why';? So I asked her if she remembered the time we were on a ferris wheel, back when SHE had the guts, and we stopped at the top..and she rocked the thing and made me cry.The whole time she called me baby Nancy...so she said she did ';sorta'; remember, and I told her PAYBACK IS A BI%26amp;%26amp;%26amp;. Yeah, baby..I waited 40 years, and it was worth it!!!!

    Naughtie Nancy

    Funny Stories

    Too funny!!

My story is probably not all that funny, but it was amusing at the time.

We took my 14 mth old daughter and son to Disney in 1991. Whilst looking around the Christmas shop she picked up a large tree ornament without us knowing - we were in the car park before we realised she had it clutched under her ';sammy'; dog (a cuddly toy that went everywhere with her) - should we return it, or keep it? What would others do?

A few days later she managed to grab a cuddly toy dog - we put that back before it was notice, but not before she had managed to give the nose a quick kiss!

Fortunately her life of crime did not progress any further!

    As-if,

Dare I ask if a certain ornament hangs on your tree every year? Certainly you can answer, if the entire forum knows that I almost caused the demise of my only sibling :+))).....I personally think it%26#39;s adorable.

    Sorry about the misnomer If-only...OOOPS!

Yes the ornament has pride of place on the tree and has every year for the last 14 and will continue to do so - beginning to look a little the worse for wear but would not throw it out as it has such memories - every year we retell the story of how we acquired it to anyone who comes to the house!

My story just makes an a*s of myself but here you are.

It took me quite a while to notice the Chrysler 300 I had rented for the two weeks had a parking brake down at my feet. A little teensy pedal to push when getting out of the car. I guess its just so the car does not roll down the hill. It took a very embarassing moment for me to find this out. I was using the ';P'; to hold the car still. It seemed to do the job.

Whilst getting out of the car around 4 days into the trip I must have pushed it slightly with my foot but had not noticed. I had noticed because I did not know it was there. Later when driving off in the car, the car warned me the brake was engaged by flasing and beeping a red BRAKE thing on the dash. Of course, brains myself figured there was something wrong with the brakes so had Dollar come and take the car away and give me a new one.

With a full tank of Gas to apologise, I must add. How nice.

Hmmm, the car had a different automatic gearbox so I decided to read the manual whereby I fell upon a page talking about a brake pedal. It was then I realised that the car actually had a handbrake and there was nothing wrong with the car they took away. I got a new, clean car with a full tank of Gas.

    Ooppssy.

The first time we took our son (kindergarten), we were sitting on one of the buses from the CBR to one of the parks, a family got on the bus, and one of their little ones had a strap on him, so his mom could hang onto him. My son turned to me and said ';cool, I didn%26#39;t know they had kids on leashed at Disney';. Sort of a cute story, I guess if especially your the parent!

This was very embarrasing at the moment but now I laughed at it:

When vacationing in Banff Canada, we booked a trip to Lake Minnewanka. The tour said it will leave at 10am. So we arrived a few minutes before and saw the bus leaving, so I began to run and yell to the bus driver to stop, my husband just behind me (I think he was very embarrased at me at the moment). It didn%26#39;t stop. Then I heard someone saying... ';M%26#39;am?';, and then we turned around and saw another bus (the 10am bus) parked and loaded, and it was the driver who was calling softly at us. We didn%26#39;t miss the bus! So we enter the bus laughing at the top of our lungs while all the people was staring at us!

I know it has nothing to do with Orlando, but at lot to do with travels %26amp; misfortunes!

By the way, I love Canada!!

A few years ago a story appeared in the Orlando Sentinel that I never stopped laughing at.

A patrol man near Fort Myers had done a detour to pick up a burger from his favourite place . but when he rejoined the route he was supposed to be on he found a large gator sunbathing in the middle of the road. So that it would not get harmed or cause a traffic accident, Confidently and with a lot of swank stopped the traffic so he could move the loitering offendent. With traffic at a stand still and interested audience, he walked up to it and gave it a kick to wake it up and get it moving .

But it wasn鈥檛 asleep, and had no intention of being moved along.

It whipped round quick and grabbed him by the leg. And wouldn鈥檛 let go. After a short wrestling match in the middle of the road which the officer was obviously loosing. The officer managed to draw his gun, and shot at it. As an Highway patrol officer and highly trained, this 8-10 foot long brute was only inches away and about to collect a wake up call between the eyes

But he missed and shot himself in the leg . He was now in more pain and bleeding badly. when several of the motorist came to his rescue., not the gator.

They were able to hold it still enough till the officer pumped 2 slugs into it, and the motorist then able to release the patrolman from his captive. They then had to rush him to Hospital where he stayed for a couple of weeks.

Good job he didnt meet a bull in a passage??????.

Needles to say the first objective of moving the amphibian from the highway without harming it failed .

In Gator Heaven somewhere no doubt there is the plaque with the inscription Dedicated to the Big Bad Cop that got his come up-pence and didn%26#39;t get away.

    almafi coast resort

Anyone been to almafi resort? is it on the beach, can%26#39;t really tell by the description just how far the beach is. How about resturants in the area thanks for the info mb

    almafi coast resort

mb109 - Almafi Resort is across a small two lane beach road from the beach. It has it%26#39;s own private beach entrance. The beach has been renourished there and looks quite good.

As for restaurants, you will need a car, however, this entire are is so small that nothing is very far.

  • Thinking about a trip to Longboat Key

Hi all, I need some help. My wife, 12 yr old and I are thinking about Longboat Key as a destination for some R%26amp;R in July. My wife%26#39;s big thing is wanting to snorkel and I was wondering if this locale caters to that? She would love the beaches I think and it looks like the water is very clear (is that right?). If anybody has alternate suggestions for Florida where we could snorkel and be at peace (no crowded beaches), please post them. We were looking at the Carribbean, but right now that isn%26#39;t looking very affordable to us and we are running out of time for finding the right location at under $2000 for room and airfare. I appreciate any help anybody here can offer. Thanks!

Thinking about a trip to Longboat Key

Longboat Key is not know for snorkeling ... you can, but you will not see much. The Keys is the place for that, BUT it doesn%26#39;t have nice beaches like Longboat Key. To get both I think the Caymans would be the nearest place, or possibly the Bahamas - both very expensive.

Thinking about a trip to Longboat Key

Chuts, thanks for your reply. We were leaning towards Grand Cayman, but the costs are very high for food and such there. I also am considering the Bahamas or Puerto Rico, but we may not find very many reasonable prices at either location.

I think you should look at Siesta Key. Lots of water actvities and the best beaches on the FL west coast.

There are lots of options as far as lodging in all price ranges.

    Yo won%26#39;t be disappointed.

    Do we need a visa

  • Casa Tua Restaurant

I was told by several people to not miss this restaurant when in SoBe. Is this true? Looked at their menu and the pastas look yummy. Should I cancel Blue Door at the Delano and try to get a table at this place?

    Casa Tua Restaurant

    Hello Hotel Snob...

We%26#39;ve never been to Casa Tua but have been to Blue Door several times. Blue Door has very good food and a great atmosphere. We always eat outdoors (they have table both inside and out) and enjoy the view overlooking the pool and people.

Know that it is VERY expensive - as in VERY... but what else would you expect from Delano!! However it%26#39;s one of my wife%26#39;s favorite restaurant so we go there fairly often.

Hopefully someone with Casa Tua experience will weigh in.

    Cheers!

P.S. If you like seafood, you might want to seriously consider Nemo on Collins at 1st Street. Their outdoor patio is perfect for a quiet evening with the one you love.

    Casa Tua Restaurant

If you want to splurge, then by all means go to Casa Tua.

Otherwise, I would head over to Grazie located on Washington and 7th Street. Absolutely great Italian food here and the service is great. Oh, did I mention that Casa Tua is EXTREMELY expensive? IMO, overrated as well.

    Good luck!

CASA TUA.........ask for a table outside.

My husband and I just went to Casa Tua last night to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary. If you%26#39;re looking for delicious food, impeccable service and the best ambiance on the beach, by all means go to Casa Tua. Our total, including two glasses of champagne, a bottle of wine, two antipastos, two entress and dessert was about $315 including tip 18% gratuity included on the bill). Fabulous, fabulous place. Perfect blend of homey, romantic, luxurious feel. VERY different from anything else on the beach. The most romantic tables are outside.

Need help with resort recommendations in Sanibel

Planning a trip to Sanibel with my husband for March, 2007. We have never been there. Looking into the following hotels: Sanibel Inn, Song of the Sea, Seaside Inn. Are they all located on the beach? Is one nicer than the others - I think I read that one of these might be a motel?? Any other recommendations for a nice small resort in Sanibel?

Need help with resort recommendations in Sanibel

Love Blind Pass Condos. Here is their site www.blind-pass.com.

    Check it out

Need help with resort recommendations in Sanibel

Sanibel has a number of nice small resorts on the beach including all of the ones you named. None are motels, though they have some efficiency type rooms. Of the 3, Sanibel Inn is the largest with the widest range of accommodations, from cottages to condos. Song of the Sea is more like a B%26amp;B and the rooms do run a tad small. Seaside Inn does have the some efficiency type rooms, but not what I would call %26#39;motel%26#39; rooms and they have cottages. All three were recently rennovated. The condos at the Sanibel Inn are now called 2 bedroom residences. Sanibel Inn also has a restaurant with live jazz entetainment - Ellington%26#39;s.

I have never stayed at any of these properties as I usually rent houses and before that I took condos. I know the Sanibel Inn better as I stayed across the street in a house a couple of years ago.

All of these places are now owned by Blackstone, a private management company that has a portfolio of upscale resorts. They also aquired South Seas Resort on Captiva in the deal as well as the Sundial and Best Western Sunset Beach - now just Sunset Beach. All 3 are located on the east end of Sanibel where the island is a bit more developed with private homes around a series of man-made canals. All have good repeat business. Pricey in winter. A small condo complex or cottage may be more economical, but will lack the services.

There are some lovely cottages on Sanibel, some direct from owner with 1 week rentals. You may want to check them out as well. Cottage 2 or 6 at White Caps are very nice, but the complex has no pool. See www.VRBO.com or www.cottages-to-castles.com for those and some others on the beach.

I also suggest you use www.sanibel-captiva.org the Chamber of commerce website for agencies, direct from owner, cottages, and other accommodations all under Where to Stay.

I have stayed at Song of the Sea and it was ok. Sort of like an efficiency with small kitchen being in same room as bed. The bathroom was extremely small. They did have a nice continental breakfast and the pool was great. It was well lit, so we swam after dark with no complaints.

A place I don%26#39;t see much written about is Sanibel Moorings. We rented a beautiful condo there for less than Song of the Sea. Of course that was a few years ago, so I don%26#39;t know if prices have changed. We were on the ocean side with ocean view. The grounds and condo were absolutely beautiful, and the welcome basket on the table when we got there was a nice added plus. We were there in summer, so there were a lot of kids, but they did have an adult swim daily. Also did not have washer/dryer in room , but the laundry room was very near. You can also rent condos on a daily basis vs weekly if you prefer. When we go back this fall, this is where we will probably stay.

If you are planning a simple, laid-back holiday for just the two of you, Sanibel Inn may just fit the bill. My oldest son and d-i-law stayed there a couple of nights in May after leaving the condo they had rented for a week and found it to be very enjoyable.

If you are staying a full week and want a little more room and a beautiful view, you might want to look at the 4th floor, one bedroom units at Ocean%26#39;s Reach. Not a full service resort (restaurant, bar, and such), but RIGHT on the beach with pool, tennis, and some other amenities. For an example check out:

    www.sanibelgulffrontcondo.com

That is one of my son%26#39;s condos (1b4) and I am not promoting it as I know it is fully booked for March, 2007...just a nice example. If you like the idea, go to the oceans reach website at www.oceansreach.com and check out similar location in the other three buildings there (2b4, 3b4, 4b4)

    Good Luck!

    July 14 Red Tide Update

The red tide has spread is k.brevis is now at moderate levels in Red Fish Pass. For those who don%26#39;t know the islands, Redfish Pass is off the north end of Captiva Island - by South Seas Resort. Moderate levels have fish kills and respitory problems associated with it. the area of %26#39;moderate%26#39; is currently small, but anyone with breathing problems should be aware of the bloom. I%26#39;mnot really clear on the mechanism - but some of the toxins created by red tide get in the air on water molcules and that%26#39;s how breathing problems happen.

The bloom is very erratic in concentration from Boca Grande to Marco Island.

    Capri International?

I just found what appears to be a new resort that hs not been listed anywhere, Capri Beach resort.

Thanks for posting this information. Looks like a delightful spot for a get-away for two. The prices seem a bit steep for the square footage, but the overall ambience is very attractive. Please let us know more if you decide to stay there.

    travellers cheques in parks

I know that you can use travellers cheques in the parks instead of cash, I just wondered if anyone could tell me what ID you need can you use a UK passport driving licence ~ has photo and address on it.

    Thanks

    travellers cheques in parks

We always use travellers cheques in the parks and we have never been asked for I.D. I took my passport the first few times but after that I never bothered. Just sign them in front of the cashier.

    travellers cheques in parks

The only time you might possibly be asked for ID is if your signatures don%26#39;t match. Usually, you sign in front of the cashier and they match and you go on your way. If the cashier has any doubt, they may ask you to sign the reverse side, and compare all three signatures. If they are still unsure, they may ask for a photo ID with a signature on it, to compare against the signatures already on the TC. It%26#39;s pretty rare for it to go that far, but if you have a really bad signature, it can happen.

thanks for the advice~ that should save so many trips to the bank ~ only 1 week to go !!!!
