nice but too nice restaurant?

Okay, so I know there are like a million posts for restaurants but I%26#39;m hoping for more specifics. My husband %26amp; I are coming to St. Augustine for the 1st time for our anniversary. We are coming from Clearwater/Tampa area, so while we love the beach we%26#39;re used to that stuff. I%26#39;m looking for a nice restaurant with exceptional food, but I don%26#39;t want overly fancy. That%26#39;s just not us. Romantic is good, but not too proper, catch me? =) I%26#39;ve heard much about this Opus 39 but upon looking at their site, they look really hgh class, and it doesn%26#39;t look like a place we%26#39;d enjoy ourselves in. Can anyone give me some suggestions as well as just really ';cool'; places to eat for the rest of the time. Maybe a place with a rustic feel or something. Any particular taverns in the historic district. Thanks in advance for any suggestions ya%26#39;ll can give me!!!

nice but too nice restaurant?

This is a common question; and there are common answers. Look on the front page of this forum and especially Mahoney has outlined pubs, restaurants, etc. - all that are in the Old City and good ones. This question was asked just this week - the answers will be the same.

Have a great time. I wouldn%26#39;t eat at:

OC Whites

Tavern on the Bay - yuck !

Definitely NOT Santa Maria - yuckier AND a rip off! !

Conch House (great for cocktails and really cool)

Fiddler%26#39;s (hit or miss)

White Lion

Aculpulco

Mango Mangos on Anastasia (waiter was rubbing his nose as he

delivered food - totally turned off)

Have fun!

We are from the Tampa Bay area also, Temple Terrace to be exact. We were just in St. Augustine in May and even though our service wasnt the best, you would probably like AIA Ale House, it has that micro brewery feel, we tryed the beer sampler and it was very interesting and fun. You must check out a new little place that was my favorite called Sangria%26#39;s, they didnt serve food yet but I understand they were suppose to soon. It is upstairs on St. George Street and they had the best Mojitio I have ever had. They have a great sound system. play great jazz tunes and have comfy sofas and chairs to sit in. Also, dont miss Denoel%26#39;s a little pastry shop on Charlotte, best eclairs EVER! If you like french onion soup, La Paviollion has the best, plus Oysters Lapavillon which are rich and yummy. Have fun!

All sound like great suggestions, I especially appreciate the ';where NOT to go%26#39;s';. Nothing worse than feeling like you%26#39;ve wasted time on vacation.

Thought I%26#39;d let any one know %26amp; ask about this place I read about a little bit ago that we%26#39;re really excited about. Taberna Del Gallo. It%26#39;s right on St George street, only open Friday %26amp; Saturday nights and sounds just too cool with candle only lighting and pirates %26amp; wenches. Maybe cheesy to some, but sounds like fun to us! Maybe someone has heard of it?

Also, a totally different subject, but how%26#39;s the parasailing up there? We%26#39;ve always wanted to go but haven%26#39;t gone in our home town so we thought what better time?! I%26#39;m going to call Smile High Parasailing... because it%26#39;s the only one I found.

Thanks again ya%26#39;ll!

yes, we went to that little place, I think Mahoney had written something about it before our trip and we went in, it was neat, just had benches and wood tables, the servers were all dressed in period attire, no air but it was in May so it was cool. Great sangria, we went in the afternoon before our dinner and before the ghost of Mantaza ship and we hoped to go back when we had finished, one of the ladies said they would be open until 11:00. Unfortunately, when we went back around 10:30 and there were lots of pirates and lots of rrrrrrrr.......going on but they had a rope in front of the door and when we asked if we could join in they said they were closed, I mentioned that we had been there eariler in the day and had been invited back but that didnt seem to matter, maybe it is a clickish thing or maybe the pirates were just tired from entertaining tourist all day, I could understand that! Anyway, it is definately a place to check out.

Since you have the beach at home , stay in the historic district and try one of these casual places:

--A1A Aleworks, sometimes crowded on weekends but nice and casual. Good outdoor seating.

--Columbia - This is a chain and I believe there is one in Tampa but the service is very good, attentive but casual. Great house salads and mojitos/sangrias. I am often disappointed at the beef and pork but the chicken dishes and shrimp is very good.

--McKnights Pubic House - great food, nice service. Tell the owner it is your anniversary or call ahead for the only outdoor table. This is very casual but a step above usual ';pub'; stuff. Nice ambience. The owners are nice and will make a big deal for your anniversary.

--Old City House --Perhaps a bit more dressy than you wanted but this is a nice little place with good food and drink.

--On the island, Gypsy Cab is very casual, a bit loud perhaps and no outdor seating but casual and very nice food.

--Cortesses Bistro on San Marco - Great food and outdoor romantic dining.

I agree completely with LNs list of places to avoid. I would add Barnacle Bills to that list myself. Too many great places to even consider those on the list.
