Although I always knew your taxes were very high ,i had no idea it was 70% per litre-gallon. What is up with this? And were do these funds go? Just asking. Bssd.

Alot of the money seems to go on funding for our NHS and Schools which we pay for through taxes. Also we are still spending alot of money on that daft war in Irag etc.

Uk is a highly taxed country but it is also a country, but then we do get alot of things free at source, so it is a bit like swings and roundabouts.

we have a good wages here with a min. wage that by law is increased every year.

some jobs get paid quite well, but not the nurses

that is why there are so many people from differeant parts of the world who come here to work and send money back home.

i know of many australians who come on works permits and take back home because they get more dollars for the english pounds

Our government also uses the excuse that fuel-tax increases are to discourage people from too much car usage.

A few years ago,when petrol was around 拢0.70 per litre,they had public protests over a proposed 拢0.01 per litre tax increase.

Since then,the dollar-barrel price has pushed petrol to around 拢 0.95 per litre.

This has had precisely zero affect on traffic levels. Which kind of exposes the goverments true intention.

mparry1964, speaking of the NHS, how would that work if you were to get sick, accident, etc... in Orlando and required hospital treatment. I ask this because my wife had to be hospitalized on vacation last winter, and the bill ended up being about $5300. Our health insurance covered all but $100 of it. Now if that was to happen to you, would the goverment reimburse that cost, or would you just be out of luck?

bssd - we take out insurance when we travel abroad (although certain european countries have a reciprocal[sp] agreement), no insurance = footing the bill. By law all holidays sold, flight only%26#39;s or packages, must have insurance offered at the time of booking by the agent.

Bssd -

Our government wouldn%26#39;t cover us for sickness or accident in any country outside of the EU.

We have to use travel insurance for all non-EU countries.

I think there are good points to our tax system and also bad, but most can still afoard a holiday and a car house etc so not all that bad, must be ok as so many foreign natinals want to sneak into this country to work etc

I personally think it%26#39;s a disgrace...the other way around! I%26#39;d continue to increase the petrol/gas taxation rate to make it financially crippling to drive a car!! But then I am a bit of a tree-hugging environmentalist!!!

I know people%26#39;s reply to this is that they %26#39;need%26#39; to drive and that there is no suitable alternative in public transport but I%26#39;d still do it anyway!!! I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ll get many votes, mind you.

I too would increase the tax on motoring. I would not want to stop people moving around or running a car so long as it was small and economic.

But the Chelsea Tractors (4x4 s ) and other Gas guzzlers would be in my sights. Up to 1300cc I would leave alone

I would start by increasing the road tax at the rate of 拢100 per for the first year..Each sucessive year i would double the previous rate. And keep that on for ar at least five years. Until I made it uneconomic for ordinary households to own one and very often 2 just to go to the office and take the kids to school. while at the same time reduce the cost of those under the 1000 CC engine capacity.

Those with plenty of money, Footballers wives and the like, they would carry on as normal and I would carry on dipping my hand in their pocket until they acted responsibly. Farmers and the like who need off road vehicles to do their job and earn a living I would find a way to reimburse them.

But Footballers, Solicitors, and Real estate agents, along with a few other community parasites could kiss goodbye to their posing mobility.
